With the growth of Internet companies, 5G, AI and Internet-of-Things (IoT) deployments, hyperscale data centers are central sites that power many of the world’s digital systems. These data centers are massive in structure with vast data processing and storage capabilities. They are designed differently to other data centers, not just to facilitate easy, rapid deployment, but to reduce energy consumption, water use, and to minimize the risk of outages.
Government, in quest to reduce carbon emissions, is leveraging alternative energies to powering these data centers. Hence data centers providers require equipment to be rack space saving, cost effective, low power consumption, scalable and high-density.
Data Center Interconnect (DCI) is a technology that connects two or more data centers together over dark fiber optic connectivity. It is critical to provide back-ups for redundancy. DCI topologies can be a simple Point-to-Point connection (P-t-P) with protection, a ring or ROADM network.
In order to conserve fiber optic usage in DCI, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology is used to transport multiple 10G/40G/100G/400G services.
A DWDM equipment is preferred due to the following:
- OSI layer 1 device and is transparent to any protocol (Voice, Video or Data)
- Able to display latency, packet loss, loopback, jitter over fiber transmission
- Easy and quick troubleshooting on transmission error
- Faster switching time (<50msec) when there is fiber cut
- Highest network security with ultra-low latency layer 1 encryption
- Detect and disable data transmission when fiber is tapped
