An island located approximately 8 km south of mainland Singapore in the Straits of Singapore serves as the nation’s only remaining offshore landfill. It plays a critical role in Singapore’s waste disposal strategy, ensuring environmental sustainability. To monitor landfill operations, the local authority installed surveillance devices across the island. However, reliable connectivity between these devices and the headquarters in Singapore, about 14.5 km away, was vital for effective monitoring and control.
The island’s network infrastructure faced significant challenges, including a lack of direct internet access and frequent disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions, particularly rain. The distance of 14.5 km between the island and the headquarters in Singapore also added to the complexity. These factors led to unreliable video feeds from surveillance devices, hampering effective monitoring by the headquarters.
In areas where fiber installation is not feasible and weather conditions are unpredictable, fixed wireless access proved to be the most efficient solution. After thorough research and evaluation, the Mimosa B5x was selected for its high capacity, long-distance capabilities, and rugged design.
